DES MOINES, Iowa, July 6, 2023 — Iowa is taking significant steps to strengthen cyber defenses with a new law that incentivizes cybersecurity best practices for businesses. As of July 1, Iowa became the fourth state in the U.S. to enact legislation aimed at encouraging organizations to adopt robust cybersecurity measures.

Governor Kim Reynolds recently signed into law House File 553, known as “An Act Relating to Affirmative Defenses for Entities Using Cybersecurity Programs.” This bill introduces liability protections for businesses and grants affirmative defense to covered organizations in case of cyber breach.
The primary objective is to bolster Iowa’s cyber defenses and safeguard sensitive data by encouraging organizations to voluntarily adopt recognized cyber best practices. This bill is the first step in identifying cybersecurity best practices and requirements for organizations.
